Dewey Updates and Mini Challenge Posts

Saturday, October 9, 2010
So I decided to start posting all my updates here instead of creating a new post every time. The latest ones will appear on top!

Hour 24 Final Post:

Well its almost over and while I did catch a nap or two, I have been cheering for Team Alliteration most of the time.

I only finished two books, but I knew going into this I was not going to do a lot of reading so I am happy to have gotten two read.

So I leave you all with a final cheer it's the one I started with and made up myself, reconfigure for the end!

Oh the places you went today
The people you did meet
Your books were your gateway
Adventure your retreat.

And for most of it I followed
As you read and read so more
This day is now tomorrow
It’s time for you to close your eyes and snore!

Hour 21 Update:

Still cheering although many of my team members have called it quits.

I have put in at total of 16 hours (took 5 off for a long nap)
Finished two book (a total of 455)
Started book # 3
Haven't won a thing (sniff)

Hour 19 Update:

I am back!

After a few hours of shut eye I am going to attempt to rally and do some more reading and cheering.

Hour 14 Update:

I am calling it quits at least for a few hours. I have almost finished my second book, but the words are starting to blur and the lids are hanging low.  I am making one more round on the cheer circuit then climbing into bed.

Hour 12 Update and Mini Challenge:

I have been at it for 12 hours as of 7 PM CST but much of my time has been spent cheering.

I finished When the Black Girl Sings by Bil Wright (266 pages)
and am half way through my second book.

Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now?
Heart With Joy by Steve Cushman

2. How many books have you read so far?
only one

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
I can't wait to see where Heart With Joy takes me, then Hunger

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?
Yes, normally I got visit my 97 year old father at the Veterans Home on Saturday, but I am going tomorrow instead!

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
Just letting the dogs out.

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
I am really enjoying being more active and not fretting about getting a lot of reading done.
7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
I think I would have liked one more update to the cheer list. Several of on my list are not participating, but I am using a post with the list I got and haven't really updated it, which is time comsuming
8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?
No I think I found my niche this time around, I am cheering and reading and participating in some of the mini-challenges. It's all good!

9. Are you getting tired yet?
Yes, but then I have been up since 3AM, so it is time for a nap! But I plan on getting back to it in the wee morning hours when I have ben sufficiently refreshed.

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?
I took the advice offered at Cheerleading central and made a list of cheers so I could cut and passed them as I went. This has worked well for me. I just hope those I am cheering for are getting some enjoyment from my silliness.

Hour 10 Mini Challenge

Lynne's Books Review challenge is a has two parts:

1)  Post a picture on your blog of a current or past pet.

I actually posted these for a contest earlier this summer and loved how both Hank and Taylor really got into their roles of being best by Alison Dare.
Doesn't Hank look scared!

And Taylor looks out cold for a one two punch!

2)  Tell us your favorite animal book and then write a sentence using the name of the main character and only the first letter of that name.

My favorite animal book growing up was Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry. I was in love with horses and always wanted one of my own. I also lived in the Midwest so the setting of an island off the coast of Virginia and Maryland and Henry's description and pictures of the sea called to me.

Meandering, Misty's majestic muscles makes me marvel mightily.

Hour 9 Mini Challenge:
Fizzy Thoughts head cheerleader is hosting a cheer challenge. Since I spent most of the evening last night coming up with cheers to use through out the 24 hours everyone was reading I have a few to share.

Rah, Rah, Shish Boom Ba
24 hours of reading is the Bomb.
AM PM don’t dismay
You can do it Yea, Yea, Yea!

Next:

Your stamina is dazzling.
Your fortitude hot stuff.
You are a mighty Reader, and you’re tough, tough, tough.

Last but not least:

DOMINATE AND DEVASTATE YOU’LL BLOW EM AWAY *CLAP* *STOMP* DEWEY READERS ARE NUMBER ONE AND WERE HERE TO STAY!

I broke for a bite to eat and am now 41 pages into my second book. I have actually been either cheering, posting, or reading since 7 A.M.  I knew going into this my goal was to cheer, and get some reading done, which I am doing.

P.S. I was not the cheerleader type so this is my first gig. Thank god I don't have to move anything but my fingers on a key board!

Hour 7 Update & Mini Challenge/Book Puzzle

Finished my first book and decide to enter yet another challenge. This one is hosted by One Librarian's Book Reviews asking us to create a book puzzle.

I couldn't resist and created two.

These were fun, but now I need to go cheer on others and see how everyone is doing.

24-Hour Read-A-Thon 5 Hour Update

Well were are into hour five and I have been cheering others on.

I did enter the Six Word Celebration challenge hosted by Estelle's Revenge with this:

Dewey-eyed readers dust to dawn turning pages

And so far and I've managed to read 206 pages (about 2 hour) of  When the Black Girl Sings by Bil Wright.

Making my rounds cheering takes about 20 minutes each time,  so I am having a hard time actually keeping track of the time spent reading. I guess I will just have to be content with pages read and an approximation for the time spent.

Now for the next challege: My Reading Room is hosting Show Me The Books.  First up is my TBR Shelf

I had to take this with my iPhone as I seem to have misplaced my camera.

Next up are my classroom books, which is where most of the the book I read end up.

This last shelf is a collection of book I use as resources for my classroom and yes I have read almost all of them at one time or another.

Now back to my books!

Ready, Set, Read/Dewey Read-a-Thon

Like many of you I too will be participating in the Dewey Read-a-Thon today. This will be the second time I have participated and while I do plan to read as much as I can today before my eyes blur and my mind shuts down from lack of sleep, what I am really looking forward to is cheering other readers on.

Here is what I hope to read today:

Heart of Joy by Steve Cushman

When the Black Girl Sings by Bil Wright

Hunger by  Jackie Morse Kessler

I have several backups too! But I will be happy if I get through all three of these today!

Good Reading to everyone!

I Read, You Read, We All Read for Dewey Read-a-Thon

Friday, October 8, 2010

Give me an R,
Give me an E,
Give me an A,
Give me  a  D,
What's it Spell READ!

As you might have guessed along with doing some reading tomorrow as part of the Dewey Read-a-Thon, I will also be participating as a cheerleader

Go Team Alliteration! YEAH!

Since I am not the kind of reader who can do 24 hours straight (I need my beauty sleep more than most) I figured I could spend some of my time cheering on those of you who are beautiful enough without sleep and encourage you to go the distance.

So here is a list of all the lovely readers who can expect a visit tomorrow.
