I Now Pronounce You Someone Else Guest Post, Review, & Giveaway, Oh My

Friday, October 29, 2010
I am very pleased to welcome Erin McCahan to Eating YA Books today as part of her blog tour. Erin was kind enough to write a guest post just for Eating YA Fans, and since I love some of the great themes and issue in I Now Prounce You Someone Else I asked if Erin could talk about self-identity vs peer pressure and sex.

Self-identity.  Peer pressure.  And sex.  Yikes!  These are three weighty issues.  Are you sure you don’t want to talk about something fun like monkeys or hamsters?  But I do address these thing in I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU SOMEONE ELSE, so, okay, I can write about them here.

Self-identity:  Find it
Peer pressure:  Don’t give in to it.
Sex:  Ah, geez.  It’s such a hyper-sexualized world anymore, and that’s just sad.

Am I done?  No?  More?

Okay.

Let me tell you about Bronwen.  She is seventeen at the start of the novel’s action, twenty or twenty-one – don’t you love how I don’t remember – at its end.  These aren’t Magic Years of self-discovery.  But they’re crucial.  I just don’t want anyone thinking that you hit twenty-one and somehow – poof – become endowed overnight with a fully formed adult identity.  You don’t.  No one does.

It is formed over long years by experience, and experience is a mix of success and failure, trial and error, learning and application, practice and refinement.  And Bronwen is at the beginning of this process, which is, she discovers, learn as you go.

The one advantage she has, that some girls do, some girls don’t, is that she takes into the process of self-discovery some depth of understanding about herself already.  Some.  She knows a few things that are right for her – including no sex before marriage.  She has started this process already – whether she is wholly aware of it or not.  And much of it comes from the very good emotional and moral foundation laid by her father and reinforced, initially, by her step-father.  So no matter how battered she gets by heartache and loss or by the errors that are unavoidable as we all grow, she always has this foundation to return to and to build on.

So – now can we talk monkeys and hamsters?

Thank you Erin for stopping by today. Oh, and just in case haven't already read or heard about her debut novel I Now Pronounce You Someone Else, then all I can say is you do not want to miss adding this to your must read list, and I am going to help you do just that by giving away to one lucky reader a copy of Erin's new book. More about that later. First, here is my review of I Now Prounounce You Someone Else.

Eighteen-year-old Bronwen Oliver has a secret: She's really Phoebe, the lost daughter of the loving Lilywhite family. That's the only way to explain her image-obsessed mother; a kind but distant stepfather; and a brother with a small personality complex. Bronwen knows she must have been switched at birth, and she can't wait to get away from her "family" for good.

Then she meets Jared Sondervan. He's sweet, funny, everything she wants — and he has the family Bronwen has always wanted too. She falls head over heels in love, and when he
proposes marriage, she joyfully accepts. But is Jared truly what she needs? And if he's not, she has to ask: What would Phoebe Lilywhite do?
(Publisher's summary from Powell's Books)
Although I Now Pronounce You Someone Else is a fun, light read that had me laughing and giggling and wishing I had been more like Browen when I was in high school, it is also a book that deals with some important teen issues such as self-identity, peer (and parental) pressures, and teen sex.

I adored Browen. She is strongly committed to not having sex until she is married. And I applauded her decision. While she stays true to her belief, she also has some deep seeded issue with her mother, which unfortunately caused her to feel like she doesn’t belong. In some ways, it is Browen’s whole switched at birth mentality that has her deciding in her senior year to marry Jarred, a college senior.

Browen’s decision to marry Jarred changed the tone of the book for me and had me worried up until the end. Don’t get me wrong I really liked Jarred, he was the perfect guy: attentive, sweet, and always the perfect gentleman. And although I felt that Browen and Jarred really did love each other, I am afraid my own mother instincts kicked in and I felt that Browen’s decision was based too much on her need to be a part of a family that was the exact opposite of the one she  had.

The true strength of the novel is Erin’s writing. The originality of the plot and Erin’s marvelous characterization was stunning. The fact that I wanted to have a long talk with Browen about her marriage plans proves that Browen was a very believable character. I also really disliked Browen mother and completely understood why Browen felt disengaged in her own family. None of these feeling would have surfaced in me if Erin’s writing had been anything less than perfect.

Unfortunately, I feel that I have not even come close to adequately explaining just how much I enjoyed this book. Therefore, I really hope you will read this book for yourself because I am positive you not be disappointed.

And to back up my recommendation, I am very pleased to able to offer (courtesy of Erin and her publishers) one lucky person US resident their very own copy of  I Now Pronounce You Someone Else. And I am throwing in an additional copy from the Book Depository to all my international friends. All you have to do is leave a comment below. Make sure you also leave an email address and let me know where you live. Giveaway ends November 5.

Review and Giveaway/ Crave by Laura J. Burns and Melinda Metz

Tuesday, September 21, 2010
Shay could never do the things her friend could⎯never try out for sports, never go to parties, never fall in love. Because of the mysterious and incurable blood disorder when was born with, she can barely make it through three day of school a week.

But now, her doctor-turned stepfather has a brand-new treatment that he thinks will change everything. And it does. As soon as the new blood starts pumping into Shay’s veins, she has visions of a different life ... Gabriel’s life. She sees an orphanage, loss, fangs, blood, and lust that she can’t explain.

Is Gabriel real? And if he is, could he really be what she thinks he is?

Move over Bella and Edward because there is a new vamp romance in YA fiction and once it hits the bookstores this week I promise everyone will crave more. I do not normally gush over a book, and I especially am not all that taken with paranormal romance but then Crave by Laura J Burns and Melinda Metz is far from the typical paranormal romance.

One of the aspects of Carve that makes it unlike so many of the paranormal romances I have read is the original and unique plot building Burns and Metz created. The author’s chose to use both third person omniscient, and first person point of view. At first, I was a little puzzled with this choice, but as the story moved forward I began to see how pertinent it was to not only the plot but the characterization too. Most of the first half of the book was devoted to helping build a connection to Shay and her illness. How Shay’s rare blood disorder had kept her from ever leading a normal life. How everyone sees her as the “sick girl” and how much she hates being that girl. Even her “best friend,” Olivia sees her as her sick friend, “not creative or strong-will or addicted to reality television.”  But it is Shay’s journals that added a more personal dimension for me and also told Gabriel’s story. Without the journal, much of Gabriel’s history would have been lost, and in the process, Shay’s motivation and reasons for doing some of the things she does later. I’d love to say more about the story, but I would definitely be getting into spoilers if I do. What I can say is that things take an unusual turn, which catapults the action forward towards an ending that will leave you crazed and craving more.

For those of you who love the romance side of a story, you will not be disappointed. In fact,  I loved this one. The reason ... Burns and Metz spend a lot of time building trust between Gabriel and Shay. This is definitely not love at first site. While Shay’s feeling for Gabriel come more quickly, there is a reason for this, but the more Gabriel interacts with Shay he too learns to care about her in a way he has never cared for anyone outside his vampire family.

Finally, I couldn’t help but get involved emotionally with both Shay and Gabriel. Their lives are so different and yet the circumstances that force these two unlikely lovers together are so well choreographed that I was glued to the paged. I also felt an unadulterated disgust for Shay’s stepfather, which continued to grow as the events of the plot became more and more complicated.

Crave is truly a fantastic story that takes a very unique premise and builds it into a story that is different than many of the paranormal romances currently saturating the genre. I enjoyed this book so much that I am giving away a copy of the book (purchased before receiving a copy from authors)  to one lucky follower. All you have to do is fill out the form below.

Following or spreading the word is not required but always appreciated. Giveaway is open internationally and ends 9/28.

Blogger's Speak Out/ Book Giveaway

Bloggers Speak Out is a movement sparked by the recent article, "Filthy Books Demeaning to Republic Education" by Dr. Wesley Scroggins that was published in the Springfield, MO News-Leader on September 18th. In this article, Scroggins vehemently advocates the censorship of books in schools, and specifically requests that the following books be removed from the Republic school system: Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler, and Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. To show our support of these authors and to fight against book banning and censorship, we have decided to take action and speak out.

And since actions speak louder than words I am giving away a copy of one of the books that Dr. Scroggins sees as "soft pornography" to show my support against book banning. This giveaway is International and ends 10/3 at Midnight CST. Just fill out the form below. Must be 13 years or older to participate.

If you are interested in joining this movement, contact Natalie at Mindful Musing.

This is an autograph copy

Daniel has spent centuries falling in love with the same girl. Life after life, crossing continents and dynasties, he and Sophia (despite her changing name and form) have been drawn together-and he remembers it all. Daniel has the memory, the ability to recall past lives and recognize souls of those he's previously known. It is a gift and a curse. For all the times that he and Sophia have been drawn together throughout history, they have also been torn painfully, fatally, apart. A love always too short.

Interwoven through Sophia and Daniel's unfolding present day relationship are glimpses of their expansive history together. From 552 Asia Minor to 1918 England and 1972 Virginia, the two souls share a long and sometimes torturous path of seeking each other time and time again. But just when young Sophia (now Lucy in the present) finally begins to awaken to the secret of their shared past, to understand the true reason for the strength of their attraction, the mysterious force that has always torn them apart reappears. Ultimately, they must come to understand what stands in the way of their love if they are ever to spend a lifetime together.

We are such stuff as dreams are made on.

Act Two, Scene One

Growing up in the enchanted Theatre Illuminata, Beatrice Shakespeare Smith learned everything about every play ever written. She knew the Players and their parts, but she didn't know that she, too, had magic. Now, she is the Mistress of Revels, the Teller of Tales, and determined to follow her stars. She is ready for the outside world.

Enter BERTIE AND COMPANY

But the outside world soon proves more topsy-turvy than any stage production. Bertie can make things happen by writing them, but outside the protective walls of the Theatre, nothing goes as planned. And her magic cannot help her make a decision between--
Nate: Her suave and swashbuckling pirate, now in mortal peril.
Ariel: A brooding, yet seductive, air spirit whose true motives remain unclear.

When Nate is kidnapped and taken prisoner by the Sea Goddess, only Bertie can free him. She and her fairy sidekicks embark on a journey aboard the Theatre's caravan, using Bertie's word magic to guide them. Along the way, they collect a sneak-thief, who has in his possession something most valuable, and meet The Mysterious Stranger, Bertie's father--and the creator of the scrimshaw medallion. Bertie's dreams are haunted by Nate, whose love for Bertie is keeping him alive, but in the daytime, it's Ariel who is tantalizingly close, and the one she is falling for. Who does Bertie love the most? And will her magic be powerful enough to save her once she enters the Sea Goddess's lair? (Publisher's comments form Powell's Books)

and

On the eve of her ninth birthday, unassuming Rose Edelstein, a girl at the periphery of schoolyard games and her distracted parents’ attention, bites into her mother's homemade lemon-chocolate cake and discovers she has a magical gift: she can taste her mother's emotions in the cake. She discovers this gift to her horror, for her mother — her cheerful, good-with-crafts, can-do mother — tastes of despair and desperation. Suddenly, and for the rest of her life, food becomes a peril and a threat to Rose.

The curse her gift has bestowed is the secret knowledge all families keep hidden — her mother's life outside the home, her father's detachment, her brother's clash with the world. Yet as Rose grows up she learns to harness her gift and becomes aware that there are secrets even her taste buds cannot discern.

It's Monday Here's What I've Been Reading

Sunday, April 25, 2010
This Monday Meme is sponsored by  Shelia at One Persons Journey Through a World of Books. Its a chance to post about what you been reding and what you plan to read. It is also a great way to network with other bloggers, which why I enjoy Mondays a lot more than I use to.

Last week I finished: ( reviews to be written)

The Summer of Skinny Dipping by Amanda Howells
The Turning by Helen Ellis
The Knife That Killed Me by Anthony McGowan

I am currently listening to the full cast audio of  Graceling by Kristin Cashore, and have begun Storm Glass by Maria V. Snyder

Finally, I wrote a review of Gringolandia by Lyn Miller-Lachmann which I hope you will take time to read, as I believe this to be a luminous novel that not only young adult readers should read but anyone who loves contemporary historical fiction.
