Support your Local Libraries

Monday, April 12, 2010
National Library Week begins April 11, and runs through April 17, and this April is also School Libraries Month 25th anniversary. This years Honorary Chair for the week long event is Author Neil Gaiman.

Since I began blogging I have become a library patron again. As a kid I went to the library once a week to check out books. It was an adventure that was the highlight of my week because I got to walk there with my friends and stop at the Ben Franklin's  (what was called a dime store way back then) and order a cherry coke from their fountain and french fries, before heading home with my loot.

When I moved last year I found that I was very close to a library and have been visiting it every two weeks to help curb the expense of buying books. The place is always busy and filled with kids and adults.

Our main branch in St Louis also frequently holds author talks. I got to see Riddley Pearson and am planning on going to hear Melissa Mar this month. These talks are free and open to the public.

Finally, I am a huge supporter of the school library. I am extremely lucky to have a wonderful school librarian who works hard to support teachers and students reach their academic goals throughout the year.

So head over the the ALA and check out all the information about National Library Week and support your local libraries because without them a lot of adult and kids would not be able to pick up a book to read.

Oh, I miss Ben Franklin's! When I was growing up we had one in our town too but it went out of business. Ours didn't offer food or beverages though. Thanks for sharing such a great memory.

Happy NLW! Thank you for supporting libraries and librarians.

i loved libraries as a little kid too! i used to beg my dad (who isn't a big reader) to drive me over once a week. nowadays, sadly, i just buy 80% of books i read. thanks for this post makes me want to go to the library and just hang like i used to... :)

Great post! I'm actually reading one of Gaiman's graphic novels right now (check out my blog - runnersami.wordpress.com) and love his work! I'm glad to hear you are such a library fan. I work in a library and always love to hear encouragement for others to support their school & public libraries. Have a great week! :)
